Woodland Heritage
has
been formed by a group of British traditional furniture makes whose
aims are to improve the way in which trees (particular broadleaf)
are grown, maintained and harvested in these islands.
There are many woodland
organisations in existence but most concentrate on defending the
little woodland remaining in this country, rather than campaigning
and taking active steps themselves to dramatically increase our
forest cover.
Many other organisations do
not recognise the importance of timber as the main product of
woodland and that if trees are to survive in the long term, they
must have a realisable economic value. Others do not seem to
appreciate the value of wood as a renewable, natural resource and if
they speak of timber production, it is in apologetic terms.
Woodland Heritage supports
the principle of multi-purpose forestry and recognises that the
production of quality timber should remain at the core of any
management system.
We recognise that it is
young trees, while they are vigorously growing, which convert carbon
dioxide to oxygen and are effectively "the lungs of the
earth". Conversely, it is overly mature and moribund
stock which reverse the process.

founder member of Woodland Heritage.
